CODE INFORMATION

2006 Michigan Residential Code (Effective Soon!)

The Michigan Residential Code becomes effective August 1st, 2008. The 2006 Michigan Building Code will also take effect that date.

2011 National Electrical Code

Are you kidding? NO, Even though the State of Michigan is so out of touch with the rest of the country, we need to stay on top of things to be able to make the changes needed. I am sure you are thinking retirement way before the State adopts the 2011 NEC. Well do it for your grand kids.

Proposals
- The IAEI is requesting every Chapter to endorse at least ten proposals and send them to the Section meeting for their endorsement. The IAEI will then provide the formal endorsement and send them to NFPA. NFPA has been delaying the publication dates for the NEC so that the IAEI Section meetings can provide valuable input into the NEC document. We are requesting that everyone in our organization to get involved in the Code Making Process. It is our code if we get involved. You are more qualified to change the code than anyone else I know. Do it. (2011 NEC Proposal Form)

2005 Code is Adopted in Michigan

The State of Michigan has adopted the 2005 Michigan Electrical Code and will become effective on November 23, 2007. The State Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, JCAR, did not act on the proposed rules and they become adopted by default. We were hoping they would listen to our concerns about the rules exempting the telecom wiring from permits. Since that is now going to make Michigan less safe the Chapter will persue getting telecom wiring back under permit requirements in future codes. The Bureau of Construction Codes had supported the requirement for permits for telecom wiring but the State Office on Administrative Hearing and Rules stated it was in conflict of other statutes. The Bureau and the Michigan Chapter do not believe they were correct.

For the time being, until November 23, 2007 permits are still required. On that date, when the 2005 Michigan Electrical Code becomes effective permits will be exempt. The wiring is still required to be installed in accordance with the Michigan Electrical Code. It is very tough to gain compliance when a permit for the work is not required.

The 2006 Michigan Residential Code will not be effective on November 23, 2007 and the 2003 MRC will be the Residential Code until the 2006 MRC becomes in effect.
